alr001 is tech-house based track features one late-night club cut of pure, padded brilliance. the original mix is a meditative, as it blissfully sways between softly thumping bass and euphoric synth snippets. hamburg based well known dj cess (formally from also known from cocoon booking) re-edited the track for dj s with a male spoken monologue that, despite being a tad pretentious, actually kind of weirdly works. fittingly, its the most dance floor appropriate of the bunch and would slip nicely into a bleary-eyed, 6am sunrise set.

dark matters kicks off with an ep from label boss amirali dropping in july. the ep features a re-work from future label mate aboutface and a remix from prins thomas. the melodic complexities and hypnotic vocals in amirali’s original mix are re-worked, securing this ep as a confident and stunning debut.

a year and a half after black merlin (george thompson) opened the common thread series with the much praised new world fantasy / ice house release george sent over some adventurous bits for a follow up and we were immediately sold. george is a true artist in his own right. all of the black merlin tracks evoke different sentiments. this time around the feeling it bring up is very conflicted. both tracks have those dark aesthetics with elements of paranoia and both also share some apocalyptic elements. it is for this reason that this is the perfect follow up for ct01. instead of just releasing music on vinyl we (with the blessings of zoroaster) are looking to evoke spirits, cross boundaries and maintain quality. major cliches, but with an artist like black merlin on your books, cliches sometimes become truth.

here we have a timely re-release of this much overlooked, later period oliver ho title – this eight track doublepack comes in with a full picture sleeve at a superb price and has a fantastic mixture of styles that reminds of christian morgenstern at his *miscellaneous+ best whilst easily demonstrating its uk techno pedigree.

nologo is back with 2 essential, tried and tested underground club tracks. orlando b serves up side a with dark world, an epic, slow burning, dark-house journey. dark world begins completely stripped back before the main hook, an eerie hypnotic vocal is introduced. funky percussive elements creep in which drive the piece forward and a deep minor pad heightens the tension setting the tone for the rest of the track. the energy builds gradually with the addition of a 303 bass line peaking just before the end, taking the listener on a dark hypnotic trip. on the flip, is none other than house & techno legend mr g who uses the dark world vocal but takes it somewhere new providing his own unique and distinctive flavour. mr gs rum remix is a dark and twisted peak-time banger, the high energy from the off set perfectly complementing the slower vibe of the original. plenty of sub and twisted synth action keeps the momentum high and the dark stab he uses punctuates the vocal nicely giving it a raw edge. dark world is an essential addition to the record bag for darker dancefloors. dj deep: i love this, your remix is super funky and dark at the same time!!! dope! tom (panorama bar): ufff nice and dark.....another mr g gem. to be served with the rum rush...

max guld was a post-punk musician from glostrup, denmark one of the western suburbs of copenhagen. in 1983 he formed a band called den forspildte elite with a friend from high school taking inspiration from experimental art punks the residents. from the beginning of 1984 to the beginning of 1985, he recorded a solo album in his 30 square meter apartment. the result was a 40 minute cassette titled for enden af corridoren released in 1985 on hub records that was limited to 100 copies.

portion control is a british electronic and industrial band from south london. the trio of john whybrew, ian sharp and dean piavani started out experimenting with electronics in 1980. linking up with in phaze records, they released a number of cassettes and records before signing with illuminated records in 1983. there followed a series of classic 12inch singles: raise the pulse, rough justice and go-talk, which have become underground dancefloor hits. the band classifies their music style as >hard rhythmic electronics< and were a major influence on skinny puppy, front line assembly and depeche mode.

van kaye + ignit is the dutch duo of ed van kasteren (van kaye) and ignatine bekken(ignit), who joined forces in the city of arnhem during early 1980. while at university, van kaye was the singer of the monomen, a local new wave band. by the end of 1979 he had become more interested in the use of electronics and rhythmic industrial patterns. in april 1980 he released a demo cassette with 30 minutes of his own work titled a slight delay.

kicking off with acid-soaked stepper x da05 sees the uk imprint continue to explore the darker recesses of the dancefloor. a bottom end as deep as you like combines with razor sharp percussion on this basement techno workout. the sound design of black science (version) warps the bleep techno blueprint into a swaggering half time roller before black science itself arrives. this dramatic piece merges tense, millsian atmospherics with stratospheric strings to create a timeless piece of expansive sci-fi techno. the filth ridden debris, a bottom-heavy groove for those of a serious disposition, rounds off another killer four track salvo of techno futurism from this on-point label.

moscoman – dark horse ep – i m a cliche. after an lp by red axes and an ep by bot ox earlier this year, im a cliche is back in the saddle with a new look and a new feel while keeping the same great sound. two eps including this one are going to be released on both digital and vinyl formats this fall, leading up to very special 10th anniversary celebrations in paris towards the end of the year.

one of las smartest young voices says the la times…which the artist suspects, may just be a covert way of saying la is dumb. “open” mike eagle wouldnt terribly mind, being born and raised in chicago where the painful winters and his uppity grandparents kept him inside as a youth. he spent his formative years watching alternative music happen on mtv and hoping to one day be able to audition for the native tongues. as a young adult after graduating with a degree in psychology, he did the next best thing and moved to los angeles, joining the project blowed collective where he made music and toured with busdriver, aceyalone, abstract, nocando, and more. he has also gained notoriety in the world of comedy by being invited by professional funny people (paul f. tompkins, hannibal buress, matt besser/ucb) to rap at their shows. he would like to be raps kurt vonnegut but recognizes that he would first have to create something as iconic as the four-stroke illustration of an anus. he practices by releasing rap albums that delight, entertain, and confuse.

accompany the reissue of woo s into the heart of love, emotional rescue is releasing a limited 7inch featuring songs not included on the vinyl pressing, plus a previously unreleased version of the beautiful title song, which only appeared in later form on their cd only, la luna album. with the original into the heart of love album only appearing as a 60 minute cassette-only release, several of the albums songs could not make the first time vinyl issue from emotional rescue. therefore, this limited edition 7inch includes two of those ommited songs. the wistful english folk duet between mark ives and sue amor on make me tea and it s sibling on the album, a little long way. possibly woo s most straight forward folk song, make me tea is as the title imagines a very particular english poem. recording as a duet between two late night lovers, awaking from post-love making slumber to find peace and with it, a nice, perfect cup of tea. however, it is the inclusion of the unreleased version of the title song, magic in the dark that is worth the admission price alone. taken from the cd only album, la luna, the original s short and gentle story of late night love is presented here in it s alternate demo form. a different vantage point is shown in revelation and then exhaltation. the sadder start expands in to a beautiful and wonderus folk celebration. mark s vocals and guitar are later joined by gentle rhythmic percussion from brother clive, before clarinets duet to a yearning finale. woo once again showing their unique mix of folk and new age electronics. a one off to cherish.
